Sestina brought Purcell‘s short opera Dido and Aeneas to the Northern Irish stage in spring 2016. With concerts in Belfast, Derry~Londonderry and Newry, the group performed this most beautiful, tragic work by the English Baroque great alongside supplementary music from Psyche by Matthew Locke – another English luminary of the same period.

Dido and Aeneas tells a tale of love, loss, magic and sailors, culminating in the famous lament “When I am laid in earth” recently voted BBC Radio 3 listeners favourite operatic aria. Sestina continue their collaboration with Director Thomas Guthrie and dancer/choreographer Bridget Madden, and will be joined by some of the finest players of Original Instruments.
